PARK SLOPE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE CORPS

 General Info

PSVAC is notified to respond via several methods. An emergency hotline number exists that anyone in the community may call directly. PSVAC also participates in the city's Mutual Aid Radio System (MARS). Through MARS, New York City Fire Department (FDNY) EMS assigns emergency calls to PSVAC. PSVAC has established a relationship with the NYPD (New York City Police Department) whereby PSVAC is in direct radio and telephone communication with police dispatchers and field officers to respond to calls for assistance. PSVAC has mutual aid relationships with other volunteer ambulance corps outside of our coverage areas who can contact PSVAC to assist them on calls as needed. In the event a response is required within Prospect Park PSVAC is in direct radio communication with Prospect Park operational command. When in service and not responding to calls, the ambulance patrols our coverage area, allowing for individuals on the street to "flag us down" in the event of an emergency.

Our dispatch center and the ambulance are equipped with a dedicated two-way radio system in addition to a backup system to ensure 100% contact with emergency personnel. Ambulance and supervisory personnel carry portable two-way radios and cellular phones while on duty. For medical control and telemetry (communicating with the hospital's emergency department for special orders, directions and to notify them of the status of patients we are transporting to their facility) the Commanding Officer and Chief of Operations also carry two-way radios and cellular phones. This allows for direct contact with on-duty personnel at all times in addition to director contact with the NYPD, FDNY, Parks Department, hospital emergency rooms and other ambulance units who are in service.
