PARK SLOPE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE CORPS

 History

PSVAC's coverage area includes Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and Prospect Park, one of the larges and most popular public parks in the New York City metropolitan area. Our extended coverage are includes the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens Cobble Hill and Kensington. In the event of a large scale incident, PSVAC responds anywhere in the five boroughs of the City of New York as directed. Recent responses include September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center and the crash of American Airlines fight 587 in the Rockaways November 12, 2001.

While PSVAC's service are is primarily residential, commercial and industrial zoned areas are also included in PSVAC's coverage area. This results in additional people who have a consistent and marked presence in our coverage are for work, business, shopping , entertainment , recreation, dining out and for visiting friends and relatives. Particularly in the late spring through early fall, there are numerous events and activities that occur in Prospect Park and the surrounding areas, including outdoor concerts, festivals, parades and sporting activities. In the winter months, a popular ice skating rink is open. Sledding and cross-country skiing are frequent activities during snowfalls.

From a cultural and socioeconomic perspective, PSVAC's coverage areas are diverse. A large percentage of the population is Latino; African American, Caribbean, Asian and European American populations have a marked presence, many also being immigrants. Families and the elderly are well represented. We frequently encounter patients either who do not speak English or for whom English is a second language. PSVAC is fortunate that virtually all crews on duty possess at least one bilingual or multilingual crewmember. While there is a broad range of household income levels, a significant amount of patients we serve are poor and working-class. May do not have health insurance or access to preventative health care. Medicare or Medicaid coverage is prevalent amongst the patients we treat.
